Mediation

The workplace is a natural breeding ground for conflict. If left unresolved then the conflict can escalate and make the workplace an extremely unpleasant place to be.

Often the people concerned have become so immersed in the conflict they see it as ‘normal’. Usually the line manager is aware of the problem but is unsure how to tackle it, until the situation becomes so bad that the disciplinary process is used as an attempt to settle the matter. Disciplinary measures are not always the answer, particularly where the intention is to change the behaviour and improve working relationships.

The benefit of mediation is that it allows the parties to work towards their own solutions, rather than imposing a procedure or process which is dictated by legislation. Because the parties are allowed to work out their problems and come to their own agreement on the way forward they are more likely to want to make the agreement work.
