Faced with a call to a disciplinary meeting, or the need to write a grievance, many employees find it hard to know how to prepare or get their thoughts and feelings down on paper. Emotions often get in the way, clouding issues and making the process difficult for employee and employer.
If there is an HR function, then the HR professionals may be involved in the process and in order to avoid a conflict of interests they may be unable to offer specific help to the individual.
Lack of preparation or clarity of the problem can lead to frustration on both sides. Whilst legislation provides the framework for the processes, unravelling the problems and dealing with the emotions can take up time and lead to immense stress on both sides.
As HR professionals, we know the pitfalls of flawed processes and we also know just how hard it can be when you face difficulties at work.
